When purchasing a diamond, there is so much more to know than the over-simplified ‘Four Cs’. We inspect each of our diamonds for twenty-six different gemological properties and checks.
To make the buying process simpler for our clients, Saphira screens out diamonds according to these twenty-six checks. In order to fully educate our clients, at consultation we discuss the six major gemological properties that you need to be aware of before making any diamond purchase.
Our aim is to demystify the diamond selection process, source your perfect stone and set it into your custom-designed and unique piece to create a special, personalised and stunning piece to be loved, admired and passed on for generations to come.
Some of the more commonly discussed diamond specifications are highlighted below:
Diamond Carat Weight
Diamond carat weight refers to the actual weight of a diamond. Much like grams or kilograms, a metric ‘carat’ represents 200 milligrams of physical weight, and is a way of measuring the weight of diamonds and classifying them. Generally speaking, the heavier the carat weight, the larger the stone.
Diamond Cut
Diamond cut is the most critical factor of the Four Cs, and is the single biggest determinant of your Diamond’s brilliance. The cut quality refers to the diamond’s fire, scintillation, sparkle and brilliance. We screen all of our diamonds for their cut quality far beyond what is represented in your GIA certificate, to deliver unmatched optics and light performance in all of our diamonds.
Diamond Colour
Diamond colour refers to the absence of yellow tint or tone in a Diamond, with D colour representing the whitest and most colourless diamond, down the alphabet to Z being a strongly yellow-tinted diamond. At Saphira, we guarantee all of our white diamonds to be free of any visible tint or tone, and so only select from the first six colour gradings, D to I according to our strict selection criteria.
Diamond Clarity
Diamond clarity refers to the absence of natural imperfections in your diamond. These imperfections are called ‘Inclusions’ within a diamond, and ‘blemishes’ externally. These natural imperfections form when a diamond is forming deep within the Earth under extreme heat and pressure.
Each diamond is unique, and diamonds without these natural imperfections are incredibly rare. Saphira only selects diamonds without visible imperfections, from the SI1 clarity grade up to Flawless to ensure that our stones are eye-clean.
Diamond Certification
All of our diamonds come certified by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), the world’s foremost authority on Gemological standards and maintenance. GIA Certification is internationally recognised, and provides assurance of the diamond’s true quality.
